Pokémon Abilities (also referred to as "Traits" or "Characteristics") are a new feature that was introduced in the Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire games.

These are not to be confused with personality type ("nature"), which can modify a Pokémon's base statistics, nor with the attack techniques ("moves") a Pokémon can learn. Rather, an Ability can be thought of as an extra, innate trait distinctive of one or more species of Pokémon. For example, the ability Rock Head nullifies the recoil damage from techniques that also damage the user when performed, such as Double Edge and Take Down. Abilities have many diverse effects.

Usually, a single species of Pokémon has only one ability associated with it, but several have two. In the latter case, it appears that one of the two abilities will be randomly assigned upon capture. Many abilities are assigned to certain species of Pokémon according to their Pokédex entries; for example, Grimer and Muk have the Stench ability because they smell absolutely foul, while Meowth has the Pickup ability because it is known to hoard shiny objects.

A list of Pokémon Abilities is as follows:

H

  • Huge Power

When the Pokémon is in battle, its attack statistic is doubled. Compare to Pure Power.
Pokémon with this ability: Marill, Azumarill, Azurill

  • Hustle

The Pokémon's attack statistic is increased by 50%, but its hidden Accuracy statistic starts out at 80%. In Pokémon Emerald, if a Pokémon with Hustle is at the front of the trainer's team, the chance of encountering a high-level wild Pokémon decreases.
Pokémon with this ability: Togepi, Togetic, Remoraid, Corsola, Delibird

  • Hyper Cutter

The Pokémon's attack statistic cannot be lowered by the opponent's moves (such as Growl or Charm). Compare to Clear Body and White Smoke. In Pokémon Emerald, if a Pokémon with Hyper Cutter uses the HM Cut in the field, more grass will be cut than usual.
Pokémon with this ability: Krabby, Kingler, Pinsir, Gligar, Mawile, Trapinch, Corphish, Crawdaunt

I

  • Illuminate

If this Pokémon is at the front of the trainer's team, the chance of encountering a wild Pokémon while in grass, water, caves etc. is doubled. Compare to Stench.
Pokémon with this ability: Staryu, Starmie, Chinchou, Lanturn, Volbeat

The Pokémon cannot be afflicted with the status ailment of poison. This covers both "normal" poison condition and the deteriorating poisoning caused by the Toxic attack. A Poisoned Pokémon acquiring this ability through use of mimicking techniques such as Skill Swap and Trace will be cured as long as it retains this ability. Compare to Inner Focus, Insomnia, Limber, Magma Armor, Oblivious, Own Tempo, Water Veil and Vital Spirit.
Pokémon with this ability: Snorlax, Zangoose, and probably Munchlax due to Snorlax's having it. Thanks to this ability, Zangoose can be said to have an advantage over its rival species, the Poison type Seviper.

  • Inner Focus

The Pokémon will not flinch by moves which have such an effect (such as Bite). This ability does not prevent the "flinching" which occurs if a Pokémon is damaged while charging a Focus Punch attack. Compare to Immunity, Insomnia, Magma Armor, Oblivious, Own Tempo, Water Veil and Vital Spirit.
Pokémon with this ability: Zubat, Golbat, Abra, Kadabra, Alakazam, Farfetch'd, Dragonite, Girafarig, Crobat, Sneasel, Snorunt, Glalie

The Pokémon cannot be afflicted by the status ailment of sleep. A Sleeping Pokémon acquiring this ability through use of mimicking techniques such as Skill Swap and Trace will be cured as long as it retains this ability. Compare to Immunity, Inner Focus, Limber, Magma Armor, Oblivious, Own Tempo, Water Veil and Vital Spirit.
Pokémon with this ability: Drowzee, Hypno, Spinarak, Ariados, Hoothoot, Noctowl, Murkrow, Shuppet, Banette

  • Intimidate

When this Pokémon enters battle, the opponent's attack statistic is lowered by one stage. Exactly how much the statistic is reduced depends on whether it has been lowered or raised before, but if used on a Pokémon whose attack has not been modified in any other way, it will reduce it to 2/3 of its value. In Pokémon Emerald, if a Pokémon with Intimidate is placed first in the trainer's team, the chance of encountering wild Pokémon whose level is up to five levels lower than that Pokémon's level is halved.
Pokémon with this ability: Ekans, Arbok, Growlithe, Arcanine, Gyarados, Tauros, Snubbull, Granbull, Stantler, Hitmontop, Mightyena, Mawile, Masquerain, Salamence

K

  • Keen Eye

L

The Pokémon will not receive damage from Ground-elemental attacks, as if one of its elemental types was Flying but without the rest of that type's weaknesses and resistances. It will also not be affected by the Arena Trap ability, nor receive damage from the Spikes attack when it enters or leaves battle. Compare to Thick Fat and Wonder Guard.
Pokémon with this ability: Gastly, Haunter, Gengar, Koffing, Weezing, Unown, Misdreavus, Baltoy, Claydol, Chimecho, Duskull, Lunatone, Solrock, Vibrava, Flygon, Latias, Latios. Many of these Pokémon have elemental types which are weak to Ground elemental attacks, so this ability can be a powerful asset, especially against a less knowledgeable or forgetful opponent.

In 2 vs. 2 battles, all Electric elemental attacks by the opponents will always hit this Pokémon, regardless of the target chosen by the opponent. In Pokémon Emerald, having this Pokemon in your team will increase the calls you get in your Match Call.
Pokémon with this ability: Cubone, Marowak, Rhyhorn, Rhydon, Electrike, Manectric. These Pokémon are either immune or resistant to Electric attacks, so this ability can come in handy when battling together with a Pokemon that is weak against them.

  • Limber

The Pokémon cannot be afflicted with the status ailment of paralysis. A Paralysed Pokémon acquiring this ability through use of mimicking techniques such as Skill Swap and Trace will be cured as long as it retains this ability. Compare to Inner Focus, Insomnia, Immunity, Magma Armor, Oblivious, Own Tempo, Water Veil and Vital Spirit. As this move is only present in FireRed and LeafGreen Pokémon, it can be assumed that NOA added this ability for those games.
Pokémon with this ability: Persian, Hitmonlee, Ditto

  • Liquid Ooze

When this Pokémon is damaged by an opponent move that involves the opponent gaining an amount HP proportional to the damage dealt (such as Leech Life, Mega Drain or Dream Eater), the opponent instead loses that amount of HP.
Pokémon with this ability: Tentacool, Tentacruel, Gulpin, Swalot

M

The Pokémon cannot be afflicted by the status ailment of freezing. A Frozen Pokémon acquiring this ability through use of mimicking techniques such as Trace will be cured as long as it retains this ability. In Pokemon Emerald, having this Pokémon together with a Pokémon Egg in your team will hatch the latter in half the steps normally required.
Pokémon with this ability: Slugma, Magcargo, Camerupt

Steel type wild or trained Pokémon cannot run or be switched out of battle unless they employ the Baton Pass attack. Compare to Arena Trap and Shadow Tag. In Pokémon Emerald, having a Pokemon with Magnet Pull first in the trainer's team will make an encounter with a wild Steel type Pokémon (assuming that there are any at all in the area) 50% more likely.
Pokémon with this ability: Magnemite, Magneton, Nosepass

  • Marvel Scale

When the Pokémon is afflicted with a status ailment, its defence statistic rises by 50% its current value (it is multiplied by 1.5). Compare to Guts.
Pokémon with this ability: Milotic

  • Minus

When this Pokémon is battling together with a Pokémon with the Plus ability in a 2 vs. 2 battle, its Special Attack statistic is increased by 50% its current value (it is multiplied by 1.5). Compare to Plus.

Pokémon with this ability: Bulbasaur, Ivysaur, Venusaur, Chikorita, Bayleef, Meganium, Treecko, Grovyle, Sceptile

  • Own Tempo

The Pokémon cannot be afflicted with the status ailment of confusion. A Confused Pokémon acquiring this ability through use of mimicking techniques such as Skill Swap and Trace will be cured. Compare to Immunity, Inner Focus, Insomnia, Limber, Magma Armor, Oblivious, Water Veil and Vital Spirit.
Pokémon with this ability: Slowpoke, Slowbro, Lickitung, Slowking, Smeargle, Spinda, Spoink, Grumpig

P

  • Pickup

If the Pokémon does not already hold an item, there is a chance after each battle that it will be found holding an item. This will work even if the Pokémon did not actually participate in the battle itself. The nature of the items and the probability of each turning up differ between games. For a detailed list of that information, visit this page (http://pokefor.greenchu.de/meowth346/gba/characteristicdata/).

Pokémon with this ability: Plusle...who else could it be?

  • Poison Point

Whenever the opponent Pokémon directly attacks this Pokémon, there is a 30% chance that the opponent will be afflicted with the Poison status ailment. This will not work if the opponent is already suffering from another status ailment. Compare to Cute Charm, Effect Spore, Flame Body, Static.
Pokémon with this ability: Nidoran (female), Nidorina, Nidoqueen, Nidoran (male), Nidorino, Nidoking, Seadra, Qwilfish, Roselia

Whenever an opponent Pokémon uses an attack against this Pokémon, that attack's Power Points (or PP) will be decreased by 2 rather than 1. This ability will work regardless of whether the attack will hit, miss, or affect the Pokémon at all. Pressure's effect is cumulative in 2 vs. 2 battles if multiple Pokémon with the same ability are targeted by the same attack (like Surf or Earthquake).
Pokémon with this ability: Aerodactyl, Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, Mewtwo, Raikou, Entei, Suicune, Lugia, Ho-Oh, Dusclops, Absol, Deoxys, Rukario. This ability is mostly found in Legendary Pokémon, making their capture all the more difficult.

  • Pure Power

When the Pokémon is in battle, its Attack statistic will be doubled. Compare to Huge Power.

R

As long as the weather is rainy (usually due to the use of the Rain Dance move), the Pokémon will recover 1/16th of its max HP every turn.

Pokémon with this ability: Rattata, Raticate, Ponyta, Rapidash, Doduo, Dodrio, Eevee, Sentret, Furret, Aipom, Snubbull, Dunsparce, Poochyena

S

When this Pokémon enters battle, a sandstorm will begin, as if it used the Sandstorm move. Compare to Drizzle and Drought.
Pokémon with this ability: Tyranitar

If there is a sandstorm (usually due to a Pokémon using the attack of the same name) this Pokémon's hidden Evasion statistic will be increased. In Pokémon Emerald, if a Pokémon with this ability is put first in the trainer's party, the chance of encountering a wild Pokémon while travelling in a sandstorm (like the Desert from Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire) will decrease to 50%.
Pokémon with this ability: Sandshrew, Sandslash, Diglett, Dugtrio, Gligar, Cacnea, Cacturne

  • Serene Grace

  • Soundproof

The Pokémon is unaffacted by all attacks which are based on loud sounds and noises. These attacks are: Grasswhistle, Growl, Heal Bell, Hyper Voice, Metal Sound, Perish Song, Roar, Screech, Sing, Snore, Supersonic and Uproar.
Pokémon with this ability: Voltorb, Electorde, Mr. Mime, Whismur, Loudred, Exploud

  • Speed Boost

Pokémon with this ability: Yanma, Ninjask

Whenever the opponent Pokémon directly attacks this Pokémon, there is a 30% chance that the opponent will be afflicted with the Paralysis status ailment. This will not work if the opponent is already suffering from another status ailment. Compare to Cute Charm, Effect Spore, Flame Body and Poison Point. • Sturdy

The One-Hit Knock-Out moves Fissure, Guillotine, Horn Drill and Sheer Cold will never work against this Pokémon.
Pokémon with this ability: Geodude, Graveler, Golem, Magnemite, Magneton, Onix, Sudowoodo, Donphan, Steelix, Shuckle, Skarmory, Pineco, Forretress, Nosepass, Aron, Lairon, Aggron

  • Swarm

When the Pokémon's HP is below 1/3rd of its maximum HP, the base damage power of its Bug-elemental attacks increases by 50%. (For example, Mega Horn's power increases from 120 to 180). Pokémon with this ability: Abra, Kadabra, Alakazam, Mew, Natu, Xatu, Espeon, Umbreon, Ralts, Kirlia, Gardevoir

  • Truant

The Pokémon can only attack every other turn (i.e. every two turns).
Pokémon with this ability: Slakoth, Slaking. This ability is actually a hindrance. It exists to equalize Slaking's tremendous advantage of having by far the highest Attack statistic in the game. A Sleeping Pokémon acquiring this ability through use of mimicking techniques such as Skill Swap and Trace will be cured as long as it retains this ability.
