Mew (ミュウ Myū) is a fictional Psychic-type Pokémon that was discovered at the beginning of Pokémon Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow in the Amazon Rainforest, according to a scientists' journals in Cinnabar Mansion.
Since this Pokémon was so rare, scientists attempted to clone it, but the experiment went wrong and resulted in the creation of Mewtwo. According to the diaries on Cinnabar, Mew wound up somehow giving birth to Mewtwo, although it is possible that this was a metaphor for Mew being the subject they were trying to clone.

Name Origin
Mew's concept is supposedly based off a house cat. The word mew refers to a sound made by a small feline.
Pokédex descriptions
- Red/Blue Pokédex description: So rare that it is still said to be a mirage by many experts. Only a few people have seen it worldwide!
- Yellow Pokédex description: When viewed through a microscope, this Pokémon's short, fine, delicate hair is seen.
- Gold Pokédex description: Apparently, it appears only to those people who are pure of heart and have a strong desire to see it.
- Silver Pokédex description: Its DNA is said to contain the genetic codes of all Pokémon, so it can use all kinds of techniques.
- Crystal Pokédex description: Because it can learn any move, some people began research to see if it is the ancestor of all Pokémon.
Capturing Mew
In the games, this Pokémon is nearly impossible to get (as is noted here). Because of this, many players turn to cheating devices such as a Gameshark in order to own this rare and powerful Pokémon.
The only official means of capturing Mew in the American version is to receive one from Nintendo personnel at special events called Pokéconventions where they are handed out to the trainers that come. Outside USA, there have been also times where trainers could send their cartridges to certain authorized personnel (such as local Nintendo importers) who would then transfer Mew to the cart. These transfers have sometimes also been accompanied with printed certificates that also have the Mew's ID number.
In Pokémon Emerald, Mew can be caught on a new island called World's Edge Island. To get there, the player needs a special ticket from Nintendo. Then, the Mew must be chased around the island until it is cornered, at which point it will fight. It is at level 30.
Mew can be captured in Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow using the "Mew glitch", which is detailed in a guide on the IGN Pokémon Red cheats page (http://cheats.ign.com/ob2/068/009/009846.html). There is currently no known way to catch Mew without using this glitch or a cheating device.
Due to Mew's rarity, it is likely one of the most often "cloned", or duplicated, Pokémon, particularly if the person doing the cloning cannot obtain another Mew through any other means.
Mew in Super Smash Bros.
Mew makes a cameo appearance in Super Smash Bros. and in Super Smash Bros. Melee. It has a small chance of coming out of a Poké Ball item. In both Smash Bros. Games, if thrown at the perfect momenent, Mew will pick up the opponent and fly away. Also, once you spot Mew, you recieve the Mew Trophey In both games, Mew appears, says "Mew" and flies away. In Super Smash Bros., it is surrounded by sparkles. In Super Smash Bros. Melee, it flies away with sparkles and a clear bubble surrounding it — this is probably a reference to Pokémon Snap. The person who threw the Poké Ball containing Mew gets a point bonus at the end of the battle.
Mew's History
In the new Pokemon 2005 movie (see external links), the backdrop revolves around Mew's mysterious history and how this extremely rare Pokémon came to be so powerful. Also, rumor has it that Mew has an evolved form which will make its first-appearance in the new said 2005 movie. However, this last rumor must be false for two reasons: one, Mew and Rukario (the co-star of the new movie) are not the same type; and two, no legendary Pokémon evolves from or into another.
The Uniqueness of Mew
Mew is unique in that it can learn any TM, HM or Move Tutor move. However, in Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, its move pool is increased even more!
On completion of the game, a man will ask to see the "Legendary Pokémon that can learn all the attacks". If you show Mew to him, then he will ask a few questions. Answer correctly, and he will teach Mew four moves. These can be chosen from a list of 100 moves, greatly adding to the variation of movesets for Mew.
