Name Origin

Blissey's name derives from the word bliss. The suffix -ey is probably just taken from the name Chansey to show relation.

The Japanese name, ハピナス (hapinasu), has two possible origins. Much like the English name, the japanese name may simply be a shortening of the japanese translation of the word "happiness". The transliteration of "happiness" is ハッピーナース (happīnāsu). The other possible origin is a combination (and shortening of the words "happy" and "nurse". The combination of the two words would be transcribed the same, "happī nāsu".

Availability

Blissey can only be obtained by evolving the elusive Chansey. Chansey's will evolve into Blissey at any level if its tameness (also known as "happiness") is sufficiently high.

Information

Blissey is a very caring and compassionate Pokémon. It will nuture any sick person or Pokémon back to health with loving care. The egg in its pouch can heal the wounded and weary. In the Pokémon games, the Softboiled technique can be used in the field to sacrifice some of Blissey's health to heal another team-mate. Blissey can also heal itself using Softboiled in battle.

Like Chansey, many Blisseys work as nurses in Pokémon Centers.

Battling notoriety

Blissey is one of the most notorious Pokémon in the game, sharing the notoriety spotlight with the likes of Mewtwo, Skarmory and Kyogre. Blissey's notoriety is due to the following factors:

  • Blissey has the most HP in the game, with a maximum of 713, the highest possible stat in Pokémon
  • Blissey has very high Special Defense
  • Blissey's only weakness is Fighting type attacks
  • Blissey can learn Softboiled, healing itself.

New players hate Blissey as she is probably the most used special "sponge" in the game due to her high Hit Points and Special Defence statistics and knowledge of the Softboiled, Heal Bell and Aromatherapy recovery attacks. She forms part of the rather overrated yet impressive "SkarmBliss" combo which includes Skarmory and Pokémon like Suicune or Dusclops to stall the opponent into submission. Many players will even quit a battle the moment a Blissey is sent out, so some players choose to use Chansey, Blissey's pre-evolved form, as a fair alternative.

Blissey is still quite flawed, hence not being labeled an über. Blissey is tied for having the poorest Attack and Defense stats in the game (after Chansey). Its speed is not too good either. On the other hand, Blissey's enormous HP makes it easy for it to survive even the strongest physical attacks, at least in most cases. Many Blissey-users equip Blissey with the attack Counter to destroy physical attackers.
