Name origin

The name Groudon originates from the words "ground" and "don", meaning 'lord'. Thus, Groudon's name means 'Ground lord', a fitting title for the strongest of all Ground-type Pokémon.

Availability

Groudon is only available in Pokémon Ruby, in the Cave of Origin. In Pokémon Sapphire, Fire Red, and Leaf Green, you need to trade from Ruby. You can also catch Groudon in Pokemon Emerald. To catch Groudon in the Pokemon Emerald version, you must defeat the elite four, then search for Terra Cave. To find it you have to use the Weather Institute to look for sunny areas and go to them to find the entrance to Terra Cave. The legendary Pokemon Groudon is at the end of the cave at level 70, so beware and use Ultra Balls to catch it.

Information

Groudon has the power to scatter rain clouds and make water evaporate with light and heat. It came as a savior to people who had been suffering from terrible floods. It has long been described in mythology as the Pokémon that raised lands and expanded continents. This Pokémon took to sleep after a cataclysmic battle with Kyogre.

Team Magma (http://www.geocities.com/pokemontours2/indexes/people/Hoenn/team/magma.htm) seeks to wake up Groudon to help them achieve their goal of drying up the sea to increase the amount of land. Fortunately, they are never able to seize control over it.

Groudon, though very strong, has always been at a disadvantage to its rival Kyogre because Kyogre has a type advantage. Groudon has many physyical attacks to take advantage of its high attack. Groudon can also learn Solarbeam to make a combo with Drought, which lets it attack without charging up. This combo can take out Kyogre sometimes, due to type advantage. However, since Kyogre has high Special Defense and Groudon has low Special Attack- it probably won't do as much damage to Kyogre as a Kyogre with a STAB plus Drizzle effect with a Water attack and high Special Attack will do to Groudon. Groudon has a better chance of attacking Kyogre with a physical attack- since Groudon has a high attack power and Kyogre has low defense power. Groudon learns Fireblast and Earthquake, two very strong moves. The strongest move Groudon can learn on its own is Fissure. It kills the opponent in 1 hit, though it only has 5 PP and 30% accuracy. Many people do not use it. Don't think Groudon is useless just because Kyogre can kill it with type advantages. Groudon is more of a physical sweeper and Kyogre is the special sweeper.

To defeat a Groudon many methods are used. Contrary to many people's beliefs, Groudon is a GROUND type- therefore weak against Ice, Grass, and Water attacks. Since all of them are special rather than physical, they will all work on Groudon. However, Water attacks get weakened by Groudon's drought and Ice and Grass types will take a lot of damage from Groudon's Fire Blast (although Groudon's Special Attack is potentially weak and no STAB). People tend to use its rival Kyogre to destroy Groudon. Other ways to destroy a Groudon is to use a Grass-type (like Sceptile) with a Solarbeam and use it since Groudon's Drought will place an effect which lets you attack without charging the Solarbeam up- but the Grass-type had better watch out for its Fire Blast. No methods are perfect- but it gives some hope of defeating Groudon.
