Names
Omanyte's name is a portmanteau of the English word ammonite, and "omu", the Japanese word for nautilus. This is because because Omanyte resembles the extinct ammonite.
In the beta, Omanyte was known as Ess. In French, is name is Amonita. In German, its name is Amonitas. In Japanese, its name is Omunaito (オムナイト).
Biology
Omanyte has been given two different origin stories, one from the video games, and one from the animé:
- In the video games, an Omanyte fossil is brought back by "cloning" the pokémon.
- In the animé, Omanyte are erroneously thought to be extinct, but at least two different places are found to be alive albeit hibernating: in Grandpa Canyon, and in the Ruins of Alph.
In either case, Omanyte is one of the oldest species of pokémon.
Omanyte is a subterranian pokémon. It has been described as both an insectivore and a plankton-eating filter feeder by canon sources; it is not sure if one of these sources is wrong, or if it is capable of both. It has 10 tentacles, and can use air bladders in its shell to rise and fall in the water.
In the video games
Omanyte cannot be captured at all; the only way to pick it up is to find the Helix Fossil (in Pokémon Red and Blue, or Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen), and 'bring it back to life.'
Omanyte has had two movelists:
- In Pokémon Red and Blue, Omanyte learns six moves; three are Normal-type, and three are Water-type. Of these, one (Withdraw at level 1) is a stat-boosting ability, two (Water Gun at level 1 and Hydro Pump at level 53) are energy attacks, two (Horn Attack at level 34 and Spike Cannon at level 46) are physical attacks, and one (Leer at level 39) is a stat-affecting attack.
- Since Pokémon Gold and Silver, Omanyte has learned 10 moves; four are Normal-type, three are Water-type, one is Dark-type, one is Ground-type, and one is Rock-type. Of these, three (Constrict at level 1, Bite at level 13, and Mud Shot at level 25) are physical attacks, one (Withdraw at level 1) is a stat-boosting ability, three (Water Gun at level 1, Ancientpower at level 49, and Hydro Pump at level 55) are energy attacks, two (Leer at level 31 and Tickle at level 43) are stat-affecting attacks, and one (Protect at level 37) is a defense move.
It gains two special abilities: Swift Swim, which boosts its speed when it is raining, and Shell Armor, which means it cannot suffer critical hits.
Its defense is in the top 20% of all pokémon. After Pokémon Gold and Silver, its Special Attack score has been in the top 20% of all pokémon. Its speed is in the bottom 20% of all pokémon.
In the animé
Omanyte's most notable role is in episode 165, Fossil Fools, in which a small remaining colony of Omanyte and Omastar are threatened by the destruction of the subterranian reservoir.
They also played a role in episode 26 (Pokémon Scent-Sation); however, this role is notable mostly because it was exactly twenty episodes before the pokémon came back to life (in episode 46, Attack Of The Prehistoric Pokémon).
Additionally, Omanyte played a role in episodes 278 (Ruin With A View) and 293 (Stairway to Devon).
