Lugia (Rugia in Japanese) is the silver bird Pokémon that lives on the Whirl Islands. It is first introduced in Pokémon Gold and Silver, and appears also in Pokémon Crystal. This Pokémon represents the Silver version of the game. It is featured in the movie c 2000 called Revelation Lugia or Pokémon the Movie 2000: The Power of One. It is Flying and Psychic type, but it learns moves like Aeroblast, Hydro Pump, and Recover.
The Pokédex describes Lugia as a Pokémon that "quietly spends its time at the bottom of the sea because its powers are so strong"
Lugia cameos in Super Smash Bros. Melee as a Pokémon who rarely appears from a Poké Ball. When it appears, Lugia (like rival Pokémon Ho-Oh) flies off and, hovering in the distance, attacks the stage and any characters standing in the way with an Aeroblast attack.
Name Origin
Lugia's name might come from the spanish words "Luz" (light) and "Rugía" (Roared). It is even possible the Lugia is named after Greg Louganis, an Olympic diver (hence, the Diving Pokemon).
Lugia itself is inspired by the Halcyons, a race of mythical Greek creatures.
Anime Appearance
This part contains a short summary for the movie Pokemon 2000:
In Pokemon the movie 2000 Lugia comes from the sea when the three Legendary birds Articuno, Zapdos and Moltres are roused by a Pokémon collector who tries to catch the trio. Lugia then battles the raging Birds and with the help of Ash and Team Rocket, manages to calm them and restore peace to nature.
Lugia appears in the TV series when Ash travels to the Whirl Islands where he teams up with Richie to help stop a Team Rocket scientist from separating a young Lugia from its parent. After all, anyone who hurts the Water's new Great Guardian must pay dearly.
