Name origin
- Bulbasaur is probably a portmanteau of bulb and sauros (lizard from Greek).
- Fushigidane is probably a portmanteau of ふしぎ (fushigi - mystery) and たね (tane - seed).
Availability
Bulbasaur appears as one of the starter Pokémon in Pokémon Red and Blue and Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen. It appears as a gift Pokémon in Pokémon Yellow. Bulbasaur is not available in any other versions, and is not catchable in the wild in any game.
Pokédex definition
Ruby: "Bulbasaur can be seen napping in bright sunlight. There is a seed on its back. By soaking up the seeds rays, the seed grows progressivly larger."
Information
Bulbasaur is a reptilian creature with a large bulb on its back; the bulb grows with the Pokémon and contains energy that the Pokémon can use up when necessary, similar to a camel storing fat in its hump. This bulb is filled with numerous seeds, and these seeds store nutrients that are used in order to grow. The bulb itself will grow bigger if it is exposed to sunlight. For this reason, Bulbasaur enjoys taking naps in the sunlight.
Bulbasaur is a small, squat lizard. It moves on all fours, and its coloration is green. It has darker green patches all over its body. Twin vine whips extend from somewhere inside its body when they are required.
Anime Appearances
Various Bulbasaurs have been seen in the anime, however, only two are major characters. The first of which is one of Ash Ketchum's team members, and the second being one of May's team members.
Ash's Bulbasaur is the Pokémon that Ash has had for the longest outside of Pikachu. Like many other Pokémon in the anime, Bulbasaur's gender is unknown, but is implied to be male. Bulbasaur typically has a calm attitude, rarely being provoked. This was in contrast to its teammate Squirtle, which tended to do things without thinking things through.
Before joining Ash's team, Bulbasaur used to take care of abandoned Pokémon with a girl named Melanie. It was unclear whether Bulbasaur was itself abandoned, but it was established that Melanie was not its trainer, enabling Ash to catch it after a battle. Originally, Bulbasur was pessimistic about Ash's loyalties to his team. When Bulbasaur, Pikachu, Squirtle, and Charmander are separated from Ash and company, Bulbasaur was often the one that insisted on Ash having abandoned them, with Charmander and Pikachu providing more optimistic outlooks. However, after that episode, Bulbasaur's loyalties have started to improve, and ironically, Bulbasaur was one of Ash's most loyal Pokémon while Charmeleon (and later, Charizard) frequently disobeyed him.
Bulbasaur would remain on Ash's active roster for much of Pocket Monsters, leaving it in Professor Oak's lab after Pokémon there started fighting among themselves. Bulbasaur was the only Pokémon able to break up these fights, and these fights would often resume if Bulbasaur leaves the lab. After leaving Ash's active roster, Bulbasaur appeared as a main character in Housoukyoku, and made one brief appearance in Advanced Generation after May acquires a Bulbasaur of her own.
Like Pikachu, Bulbasaur had decided it would be best if it does not evolve. Although this decision was not accepted by other Bulbasaurs (and evolved forms therein), it has been a decision that others have come to accept. Bulbasaur has also shown traits not unlike those of Fighting-typed Pokémon in one episode, perhaps due to its calm nature.
Interestingly, Bulbasaur is the only member of Ash's team that has not defeated a single Pokémon in Ash's League tournaments (except for situations where it knocked itself out or where it quickly knocks out a Pokémon that was worn out by a teammate), and it is one of only two of Ash's other Pocket Monsters team members (Snorlax will later appear) to appear in Advanced Generation.
May befriended one, which now travels with her. Because of the heart-shaped marks on this Bulbasaur's forehead, this one is implied to be female. Like May's other Pokémon, it is a contest Pokémon. It also learns Petal Dance later on in the series.
Manga appearances
In Pokémon Adventures, Red receives a Bulbasaur from Professor Oak.
In Magical Pokémon Journey, the character Pistachio has a female Bulbasaur (nicknamed Danerina in the original Japanese version) who has a crush on him.
