Ivysaur (Fushigisou (フシギソウ Fushigisou) in the original Japanese, Bisaknosp in German, Herbizarre in French, Isanghaepeul in Korean) is a fictional character from the Pokémon franchise.
In this evolved form of Bulbasaur, the bud that Bulbasaur carries on its back has grown into a full ivy blossom; it will grow larger in sunlight. As the blossom grows, Ivysaur loses the ability to stand on its hind legs. The blossom produces a pleasant smell when it is ready to bloom, and Ivysaur is ready to evolve into Venusaur.

Name origin
"Ivysaur" is probably a combination of the English "ivy" and the Greek sauros, meaning lizard (as in "dinosaur").
Its Japanese name, Fushigisou, is probably a combination of the Japanese words 不思議 (ふしぎ, fushigi, "mystery") and 草 (くさ, kusa, "grass"). The kanji for "grass" can also be read そう (sō). (see Kanji - Readings)
Availability
In all of the Pokémon games, the only way to get an Ivysaur is by evolving a Bulbasaur. Therefore, the availability of Bulbasaur dictates the availability of Ivysaur.
Pokédex definition
Ruby: "There is a bud on this Pokémon's back. To support its weight, Ivysaur's legs and trunk grow thick and strong. If it starts spending more time lying in the sunlight, it's a sign that the bud will bloom into a large flower soon."
Anime Appearances
There has been one major appearance of Ivysaur in the anime. In the episode "The Secret Garden", Ash Ketchum and company stumbled upon an evolutionary ground for Bulbasaur that was protected by a Venusaur. They witnessed hundreds of Bulbasaur evolve into Ivysaur.
Manga appearances
In Pokémon Adventures, Red's Bulbasaur evolves into Ivysaur, and then into Venusaur.
