Charmander (Japanese: ヒトカゲ Hitokage) is a fictional character from the Pokémon franchise. Charmander, as well as its evolved forms, has a flame on the tip of its tail; the flame is said to indicate its life-force, burning weaker or stronger depending on the Charmander's condition. Baby Charmander that are not yet familiar with this flame sometimes accidentally burn themselves with it. Charmander generally prefer hot places to live.

Name origin

Charmander is probably a portmanteau of char and salamander.

Hitokage was probably formed from 火蜥蜴 (hi tokage, literally fire lizard), but can also be viewed as being a pun on words (人影 - hito kage, means shadowy figure).

Availability

In Pokémon Red and Blue, Charmander is one of the starter Pokémon, along with Bulbasaur and Squirtle. The same is true in their enhanced remakes, Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen.

In Pokémon Yellow, Charmander is not a starter, but one is given to the player as a gift at one point.

In Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, Charmander can only be obtained through trading with the original three versions.

In Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire Charmander is only obtainable by trading with FireRed and LeafGreen.

Charmander also appears in the Nintendo 64 game Pokémon Snap.

Pokédex definition

Ruby: "The flame that burns at the tip of its tail is an indication of its emotions. The flame waers when Charmander is enjoying itself. If the Pokémon becomes enraged, the flame burns fiercely."

Anime Appearances

In the Pokémon anime, Ash Ketchum and his friends once found a Charmander on a rock, waiting for its owner. Because a Charmander will die if the flame on its tail goes out, they feared for its life during a rainstorm. Ash and his friends rescued it and took it to the local Pokémon Center, but it returned to the very same rock once it had recovered. It turned out that its Trainer had abandoned it and deceived the Charmander by convincing it he would come back for it. After the Charmander discovered this, it rejected its previous Trainer for Ash. Ash's Charmander later evolved into Charmeleon and then into Charizard.

Richie also has a Charmander named Zippo, which was used against Ash in their Indigo League battle. However, at some point before his next appearance in the Whirl Islands story arc, Zippo had evolved into a Charmeleon.

As a starter Pokémon, Charmander has also been seen alongside Squirtle and Bulbasaur in episodes that feature the starters. Charmanders have appeared in both Pokémon Chronicles and Advanced Generation to that effect, although their roles are minor in nature.

Manga Appearances

In Pokémon Adventures, Green Oak received a Charmander from his grandfather, Professor Oak. Having since evolved into a Charizard, it is part of his team as Gym Leader of Viridian City.

In Magical Pokémon Journey, a Charmander belongs to the character Peanut. This Charmander is always causing trouble by getting into fights with other Pokémon.
