Caterpie (キャタピー Kyatapī) is a basic bug-type Pokémon that evolves into Metapod at level 7 and Butterfree at level 10. Caterpie has suction cups on its feet that enable it to climb trees, where it camouflages itself among leaves of the same color as its body while foraging; the eye-like patterns on its forehead are intended to scare off enemies, and when that fails, touching Caterpie's horns will cause it to release a horrible stench to protect itself.

Name origin
Caterpie's name obviously is derived from the word Caterpillar. "Kyatapī" is how the name is pronounced in Katakana.
Availability
In Pokémon Red/Blue/Yellow, and Pokemon Leaf Green/Fire Red , Caterpie can be found in the Viridian Forest and on Route 25. In Pokémon Gold/Silver/Crystal, Caterpie can be found in the National Park, and - in Gold and Crystal - in Ilex Forest. In Pokémon Sapphire/Ruby, Caterpie can only be obtained by trading from Leaf Green or Fire Red.
Pokédex definition
Ruby: "Caterpie has a voracious appetite. It can devour leaves igger than its body right before your eyes. From its antenna, this Pokémon releases a terrifically strong odor."

Caterpie is vulnerable to Fire, Flying, Rock and - in Pokémon Red/Blue - Poison, and strong against Grass, Ground and Fighting.
Anime Appearances
In the anime, Caterpie is the first Pokémon Ash Ketchum captures. He does so in Viridian Forest, and in the same place it evolves into Metapod and Butterfree.
Manga Appearances
In Pokémon Adventures, the first Pokémon that Yellow captures on her own is a Caterpie. At first, she had no idea how she was supposed to go about capturing it, though, since she hates to battle Pokémon.
