Metapod (Transel (トランセル Toranseru) in Japanese) is a Stage 1 bug-type Pokémon that evolves from Caterpie at level 7 and further evolves into Butterfree at level 10. Inside its hard shell, Metapod's body is soft and vulnerable as it prepares for its further evolution; it generally remains motionless, but a hard impact may cause it to pop out of its shell.

Name origin
Metapod's name is probably a combination of "Metamorphose" and "Pod." Its Japanese name, Transel, is probably a pronunciation of "Trans-" and "Cell."
Availability
In Pokémon Red/Blue, Yellow and Pokémon Gold/Silver/Crystal, Metapod can be obtained by evolving Caterpie; alternatively, it can be found in the same locations as Caterpie. In Pokémon Sapphire/Ruby, Metapod can only be obtained by trading from Leaf Green or Fire Red.
Pokédex definition
Ruby: "The shell covering this Pokémon's body is as hard as an iron slab. Metapod does not move very much. It stats still because it is preparing its soft innards for evolution inside the hard shell."
Strengths / weaknesses
Metapod is vulnerable to Fire, Flying, Rock and - in Pokémon Red/Blue - Poison, and strong against Grass, Ground and Fighting.
Anime Appearances
In the Pokémon Anime, when Ash's Caterpie evolves into a Metapod, he is challenged by another trainer who also has a Metapod. Since the only attack Metapod can use is Harden, the battle turns out to be a real waste of time because the only order was to harden more than the opponent's Metapod. In the end, Misty had to break it up.
In that same episode, after a Beedrill swarm creates life-threatening situation for Ash, Metapod evolves into Butterfree to save the day.
