Steelix is a Pokémon that is the evolved form of Onix. It was rumoured to exist long before it was actually available (it was known as "Baryonix" before it was actually available.) It is a difficult Pokémon to obtain, as one must make Onix hold a Metal Coat and then trade it in order to make it evolve. Steelix is a Steel/Ground type Pokémon.

Name Origin
This Pokémon's name is derived from the word "steel". The suffix "-ix" is probably just taken from Onix's name to show relation. Similarly, its Japanese name, ハガネール (Haganēru), is derived from the word 鋼 (はがね - hagane - steel)
Information
Steelix is one of the tallest Pokémon in the Pokémon universe. Over 30-feet tall, it towers over other Pokémon such as Gyarados and Onix.
Pokédex description
Ruby/Sapphire: Steelix lives even further underground than Onix. This Pokémon is known to dig towards the earth's core. There are records of this Pokémon reaching a depth of over six-tenths of a mile underground.
