Latias is a unique dragon/psychic-type Pokémon that can fly. Her brother is Latios. They both appeared in the movie Pokémon Heroes. Both of them can be found in the Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire games in Southern Island (http://www.geocities.com/pokemontours/Hoenn/S_is.htm).

Name Origin

Latias' name might have been derived from the Latin word" 'latere' (as in latent), which means 'to lie hidden', 'to be invisible'. This is prudent as in the movie Latios and Latias disguised themselves as humans. The first person singular form of this word is lateo, which, when mispronounced in English, sounds exactly like this Red Dragon's name, thus making it translatable as 'I lay hidden'.

Another Theory is that the A in Latias has a Feminine Meaning. Hence Latias' Female Gender.

Availability

In Pokémon Sapphire, once you beat the Elite Four Latias appears at level 40 at random locations, similar to Entei, Raikou, and Suicune in Pokémon Gold and Silver. Once it has appeared once, its current location can be found in the Pokédex.

In Pokémon Ruby, after getting the Eon ticket from a Nintendo event or e-card, Latias can be found on the Southern Island at level 50.

In Pokémon Emerald, after beating the Elite Four you will see a news report about a flying Pokémon. Your mother than asks what colour it is. If you select Red, it appears randomly as in Ruby. If you select Blue, it will appear on the Southern Island if you can obtain the Eon Ticket.

Pokédex Information

  • According to the Pokémon Ruby Pokédex, "LATIAS is highly sensitive to the emotions of people. If it senses any hostility, this POKéMON ruffles the feathers all over its body and cries shrilly to intimidate the foe."
  • According to the Pokémon Sapphire Pokédex, "LATIAS is highly intelligent and capable of understanding human speech. It is covered with a glass-like down. The POKéMON enfolds its body with its down and refracts light to alter its appearance."

Latias is the only female legendary, and can be found randomly in Pokemon Sapphire. Whenever you exit an area, she does too. In Pokémon Ruby, she is found on Southern island holding the Soul Dew. In Fire Red and Leaf Green, you need to trade her from R/S.

Latias is one of the only Pokémon that is affected by the Soul Dew item. When Latias holds the Soul Dew, its Special Attack and Special Defense stats are multiplied by 1.5 while it is in battle. Latias holding the Soul Dew is widely considered to be an über Pokémon.
