Latios is a unique dragon/psychic-type Pokémon that can fly. His sister is Latias. They both appeared in the movie Pokémon Heroes. Both of them can also be found in the Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire games in Southern Island (http://www.geocities.com/pokemontours/Hoenn/S_is.htm).

Name Origin

Latios' name might have been derived from the Latin word 'latere' (as in latent), which means 'to lie hidden', 'to be invisible'. The first person singular form of this word is lateo, which, when mispronounced, sounds exactly like this Blue Dragon's name, thus making it translatable as 'I lay hidden'.

Another Theory is that the O in Latios has a Masculine Meaning. Hence Latios' Male Gender.

Availability

In Pokémon Ruby, once you beat the Elite Four Latios appears at level 40 at random locations, similar to Entei, Raikou, and Suicune in Pokémon Gold and Silver. Once it has appeared once, its current location can be found in the Pokédex.

In Pokémon Sapphire, after getting the Eon ticket from a Nintendo event or e-card, Latios can be found on the Southern Island at level 50.

In Pokémon Emerald, after beating the Elite Four you will see a news report about a flying Pokémon. Your mother than asks what colour it is. If you select Blue, it appears randomly as in Ruby. If you select Red, it will appear on the Southern Island if you can obtain the Eon Ticket.

Pokédex

According to the Pokémon Ruby Pokédex, "LATIOS has the ability to make its foe see an image of what it has seen or imagines in its head. This POKéMON is intelligent and understands human speech."

According to the Pokémon Sapphire Pokédex, "LATIOS will only open its heart to a TRAINER with a compassionate spirit. This POKéMON can fly faster than a jet plane by folding its forelegs to minimize air resistance."es:Latios

Latios is the only male legendary, and can be caught only in Pokémon Ruby. He roams the 'Route' areas of the game, and when you leave, so does he. In the Sapphire version, you must travel to Southern Island via E-reader-scannable pass, and in Emerald, he follows the same pattern as in Pokémon Ruby (after your mother asks you what color the Pokémon you saw on TV was, tell her it was "blue" to make him appear).
