Totodile, known as Waninoko (ワニノコ) in Japan, is one of the three starter pokémon available in Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal (the other two are Chikorita and Cyndaquil). According to the pokédex, this pokémon has very "well-developed jaws capable of crushing anything" which become useful when it evolves into Feraligatr and learns the dark-type attack Bite.
Picking this pokémon as a starter is categorized as choosing a "Medium" difficulty level for the game because neither of the first two gym leaders use pokémon whose type is strong nor weak against Totodile.

Name Origin
The name Totodile comes from the words tot (a word for a small child) and crocodile. In the original Japanese, "wani" (ワニ) means alligator and "ko" is a suffix that means "child".
In the anime
In the Pokémon anime, Ash's Totodile is rather care-free. Once, it got distracted from the battle and chose instead to go for a swim. It also enjoys dancing. Every time it comes out of its pokéball, it does a little dance before entering battle.
In the manga
In Pokémon Adventures, Professor Elm's Totodile is stolen by Silver.
