Celebi, known also as Cerebi (セレビィ Serebii) in Japan, is listed as Pokémon #251 in the Pokédex. It is said to have the power to travel through time.

Name origin

Celebi probably originated from the word "celestial". It also is a variation on the Pokémon's Japanese name, Serebii.

Information

Celebi wanders across time. Grass and trees flourish in the forests in which it has appeared. When it disappears deep in a forest, it is said to leave behind an egg it brought from the future. This Pokémon came from the future by crossing over time. It is thought that so long as Celebi appears, a bright and shining future awaits us.

In Super Smash Bros. Melee, Celebi is one of the Pokémon that comes out of a Pokéball. It simply flies away once released. Whomever sees it gets a bonus of 10,000 points at the end of the battle. A Celebi trophy is also placed in the trophy gallery. Celebi also makes a cameo in Pokémon Colosseum whenever the player uses a Time Flute item. Celebi is the only way to completely purify a Shadow Pokémon. This is no doubt an allusion to its own experiences as a Shadow Pokémon in Pokémon 4Ever: The Voice of the Forest.

Availability

Celebi is not available in any English version of the Pokémon game. Like Mew, you would have obtained it by a Nintendo giveaway event or by using Gameshark. However, it is also available in the Japanese bonus disc for Pokemon Colosseum, as Jirachi is available on the American version.

Obtaining Celebi in the game

In the Japanese version of Pokémon Crystal, Celebi can be caught by obtaining the GS ball (the same one that Ash had to carry around while in the Orange Islands). However, this requires a cable to connect the Game Boy Color with a cell phone.

To do this in the English version, it is necessary to use a Game Shark code to obtain the GS ball, since it is not possible to get the cable that connects the Game Boy Color to a cell phone outside of Japan, nor did the game keep any compatibility with it once translated.

Through either method, the player shows the GS Ball to Kurt the Pokéball Expert; he is astonished, and will ask you to take it as a gift of sorts to the Ilex Forest shrine, where the forest's protector, Celebi, is honored. After placing the GS ball there, Celebi will appear and attack.

As with all mission-centered Pokémon (such as Sudowoodo and the red Gyarados), you only get one shot at this; if you make it faint your chance is gone forever, you will never be able to catch it again.

Celebi in Pokémon Colosseum

In Pokémon Colosseum, the power of Celebi purifies Shadow Pokémon. When using one of the three Time Flutes, Celebi will appear and purify a Shadow Pokémon without the usual purification process. In the Japanese version, Celebi can be caught with the bonus disc after purifying every Pokémon. However, the American bonus disc had Jirachi in place of Celebi.

Movie appearance

Celebi is one of the main characters in the movie Pokémon 4Ever.

In this movie, Celebi is running away from a hunter. It crashes into young Samuel Oak who protects it, and in return, Celebi transports them 40 years into the future (bringing them to the present) to save them from a former Team Rocket member who turns Celebi into a Shadow Pokémon.

Animé Appearances

In Pokémon Chronicles, Richie meets a Celebi, and goes back in time to save a Pokémon Center.
