Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 4,165 km² (1,608 mi²). 4,107 km² (1,586 mi²) of it is land and 58 km² (22 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.38% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 48,109 people, 17,861 households, and 13,199 families residing in the county. The population density is 12/km² (30/mi²). There are 20,142 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (13/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 80.35% White, 2.21% Black or African American, 10.72% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.44% from other races, and 5.03% from two or more races. 3.84% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 17,861 households out of which 33.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.50% are married couples living together, 11.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.10% are non-families. 23.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.61 and the average family size is 3.05.
In the county, the population is spread out with 26.10% under the age of 18, 9.70% from 18 to 24, 27.00% from 25 to 44, 23.30% from 45 to 64, and 13.80% who are 65 years of age or older.
