Poteau is a city located in Le Flore County, Oklahoma. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 7,939. It is the county seat of Le Flore CountyTemplate:GR. It is the site of the largest hill in the United States, Cavanal Hill.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 82.0 km² (31.7 mi²). 74.2 km² (28.6 mi²) of it is land and 7.8 km² (3.0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 9.54% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 7,939 people, 3,013 households, and 2,042 families residing in the city. The population density is 107.0/km² (277.2/mi²). There are 3,351 housing units at an average density of 45.2/km² (117.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 82.14% White, 2.24% African American, 10.00% Native American, 0.38% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.39% from other races, and 3.83% from two or more races. 5.82% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 3,013 households out of which 31.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.0% are married couples living together, 13.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% are non-families. 28.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 3.02.
In the city the population is spread out with 24.6% under the age of 18, 12.8% from 18 to 24, 26.4% from 25 to 44, 19.9% from 45 to 64, and 16.3% who are 65 years of age or older.
