Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,350 km² (521 mi²). 1,342 km² (518 mi²) of it is land and 8 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.59% water.

There are 2,744 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (5/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 75.18% White, 0.36% Black or African American, 17.31% Native American, 0.32% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.75% from other races, and 6.09% from two or more races. 2.14% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,373 households out of which 30.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.20% are married couples living together, 10.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.30% are non-families. 27.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 3.05.
