According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,611 km² (1,008 mi²). 2,590 km² (1,000 mi²) of it is land and 21 km² (8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.81% water.

The racial makeup of the county is 92.16% White, 0.13% Black or African American, 4.64% Native American, 0.06% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.72% from other races, and 2.28% from two or more races. 2.68% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
