Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,569 km² (1,378 mi²). 3,382 km² (1,306 mi²) of it is land and 186 km² (72 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.22% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 43,953 people, 17,157 households, and 11,941 families residing in the county. The population density is 13/km² (34/mi²). There are 21,520 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (16/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 77.20% White, 4.02% Black or African American, 12.50% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.78% from other races, and 5.20% from two or more races. 2.14% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 17,157 households out of which 29.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.90% are married couples living together, 11.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.40% are non-families. 27.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.40 and the average family size is 2.90.
