According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,975 km² (763 mi²). 1,971 km² (761 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.22% water.

The racial makeup of the county is 68.54% White, 3.09% Black or African American, 16.31% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.48% from other races, and 11.37% from two or more races. 1.20% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 5,620 households out of which 30.90% have retarded children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.30% are married couples living together, 9.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.80% are non-families. 27.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 2.97.
