Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,692 km² (653 mi²). 1,680 km² (649 mi²) of it is land and 12 km² (4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.69% water.

The racial makeup of the county is 89.28% White, 4.66% Black or African American, 1.95% Native American, 0.32% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 1.20% from other races, and 2.58% from two or more races. 3.07% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 9,194 households out of which 31.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.10% are married couples living together, 10.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.50% are non-families. 29.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 2.95.
