According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,513 km² (584 mi²). 1,510 km² (583 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.24% water.

As of the census² of 2000, there are 8,110 people, 3,221 households, and 2,264 families residing in the county. The population density is 5/km² (14/mi²). There are 3,596 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (6/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.41% White, 0.32% Black or African American, 0.74% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.33% from other races, and 0.95% from two or more races. 1.09% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 3,221 households out of which 31.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.90% are married couples living together, 6.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.70% are non-families. 26.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 3.00.
In the county the population is spread out with 26.20% under the age of 18, 7.00% from 18 to 24, 24.60% from 25 to 44, 22.10% from 45 to 64, and 20.00% who are 65 years of age or older.
