Pawnee County (standard abbreviation: PN) is a county located in the state of Kansas. As of 2000, the population is 7,233. Its county seat is Larned.6

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,954 km² (755 mi²). 1,953 km² (754 mi²) of it is land and 1 km² (0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.05% water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 7,233 people, 2,739 households, and 1,785 families residing in the county. The population density is 4/km² (10/mi²). There are 3,114 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (4/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 90.96% White, 5.00% Black or African American, 0.95% Native American, 0.57% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.22% from other races, and 1.30% from two or more races. 4.16% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,739 households out of which 29.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.80% are married couples living together, 7.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.80% are non-families. 32.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.31 and the average family size is 2.91.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.20% under the age of 18, 7.30% from 18 to 24, 25.40% from 25 to 44, 24.60% from 45 to 64, and 18.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 112.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 112.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $35,175, and the median income for a family is $45,634. Males have a median income of $26,751 versus $20,931 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,584. 11.80% of the population and 5.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.00% of those under the age of 18 and 9.90% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
