Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,368 km² (914 mi²). 2,355 km² (909 mi²) of it is land and 14 km² (5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.58% water.

As of the census² of 2000, there are 3,791 people, 1,695 households, and 1,098 families residing in the county. The population density is 2/km² (4/mi²). There are 2,103 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (2/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.79% White, 0.03% Black or African American, 0.34% Native American, 0.05% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.05% from other races, and 0.71% from two or more races. 0.71% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,695 households out of which 23.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.10% are married couples living together, 4.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.20% are non-families. 32.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.21 and the average family size is 2.80.
In the county the population is spread out with 21.90% under the age of 18, 4.40% from 18 to 24, 21.50% from 25 to 44, 26.20% from 45 to 64, and 25.90% who are 65 years of age or older.
