Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,069 km² (1,185 mi²). 3,061 km² (1,182 mi²) of it is land and 8 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.25% water.

As of the census² of 2000, there are 25,946 people, 9,888 households, and 7,089 families residing in the county. The population density is 8/km² (22/mi²). There are 10,877 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (9/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 94.62% White, 0.71% Black or African American, 1.05% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 1.29% from other races, and 2.06% from two or more races. 3.58% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 9,888 households out of which 34.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.90% are married couples living together, 8.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.30% are non-families. 25.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 3.10.
In the county the population is spread out with 28.50% under the age of 18, 7.50% from 18 to 24, 26.20% from 25 to 44, 22.40% from 45 to 64, and 15.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 96.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.90 males.
