Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,985 km² (1,153 mi²). 2,952 km² (1,140 mi²) of it is land and 33 km² (13 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.12% water.

As of the census² of 2000, there are 7,673 people, 3,234 households, and 2,153 families residing in the county. The population density is 3/km² (7/mi²). There are 4,273 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (4/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.53% White, 0.14% Black or African American, 0.83% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.81% from other races, and 1.58% from two or more races. 1.72% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 3,234 households out of which 27.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.50% are married couples living together, 6.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.40% are non-families. 30.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.31 and the average family size is 2.86.
In the county the population is spread out with 23.70% under the age of 18, 6.50% from 18 to 24, 23.20% from 25 to 44, 23.70% from 45 to 64, and 22.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 95.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.50 males.
