Garden City is a city located in Finney County, Kansas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 28,451. It is the county seat of Finney CountyTemplate:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 22.1 km² (8.5 mi²). 22.1 km² (8.5 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 28,451 people, 9,338 households, and 6,760 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,287.8/km² (3,334.1/mi²). There are 9,907 housing units at an average density of 448.4/km² (1,161.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 68.80% White, 1.49% African American, 1.06% Native American, 3.55% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 22.28% from other races, and 2.73% from two or more races. 43.91% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 9,338 households out of which 43.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.4% are married couples living together, 10.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.6% are non-families. 22.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.99 and the average family size is 3.51.

In the city the population is spread out with 32.6% under the age of 18, 11.6% from 18 to 24, 31.0% from 25 to 44, 16.6% from 45 to 64, and 8.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 29 years. For every 100 females there are 102.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $37,752, and the median income for a family is $43,471. Males have a median income of $29,343 versus $21,247 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,200. 14.3% of the population and 9.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 17.7% of those under the age of 18 and 12.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
