Allen County (standard abbreviation: AL) is a county in the State of Kansas. As of 2000, the population is 14,385. The largest city and county seat is Iola.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,308 km² (505 mi²). 1,303 km² (503 mi²) of it is land and 6 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.43% water.

As of the census² of 2000, there are 14,385 people, 5,775 households, and 3,892 families residing in the county. The population density is 11/km² (29/mi²). There are 6,449 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (13/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 94.80% White, 1.63% Black or African American, 0.78% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.86% from other races, and 1.68% from two or more races. 1.93% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,775 households out of which 29.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.60% are married couples living together, 8.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.60% are non-families. 28.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.43 and the average family size is 2.98.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.20% under the age of 18, 9.80% from 18 to 24, 24.10% from 25 to 44, 22.90% from 45 to 64, and 18.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 95.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $31,481, and the median income for a family is $39,117. Males have a median income of $27,305 versus $19,221 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,640. 14.90% of the population and 11.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 20.20% of those under the age of 18 and 12.70% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
