Saline County (standard abbreviation: SA) is a county located in the state of Kansas. As of 2000, the population is 53,597. Its county seat is Salina.6

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,868 km² (721 mi²). 1,864 km² (720 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.23% water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 53,597 people, 21,436 households, and 14,212 families residing in the county. The population density is 29/km² (74/mi²). There are 22,695 housing units at an average density of 12/km² (32/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 89.17% White, 3.10% Black or African American, 0.52% Native American, 1.70% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 3.33% from other races, and 2.14% from two or more races. 6.02% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 21,436 households out of which 32.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.90% are married couples living together, 9.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.70% are non-families. 28.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.43 and the average family size is 2.98.

In the county the population is spread out with 26.20% under the age of 18, 9.40% from 18 to 24, 28.40% from 25 to 44, 22.10% from 45 to 64, and 14.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 97.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $37,308, and the median income for a family is $46,362. Males have a median income of $31,509 versus $22,047 for females. The per capita income for the county is $19,073. 8.80% of the population and 6.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.60% of those under the age of 18 and 8.80% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
