Osage County, Oklahoma

Osage County is a county located in the state of Oklahoma. Coterminous with the Osage Indian Reservation, it is the home of the Osage Nation. As of 2000, the population is 44,437. Its county seat is Pawhuska6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 5,967 km² (2,304 mi²). 5,830 km² (2,251 mi²) of it is land and 137 km² (53 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.30% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 44,437 people, 16,617 households, and 12,213 families residing in the county. The population density is 8/km² (20/mi²). There are 18,826 housing units at an average density of 3/km² (8/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 67.01% White, 10.84% Black or African American, 14.42% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.63% from other races, and 6.83% from two or more races. 2.12% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 16,617 households out of which 33.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.40% are married couples living together, 10.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.50% are non-families. 23.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 3.04.

In the county, the population is spread out with 26.40% under the age of 18, 7.70% from 18 to 24, 27.50% from 25 to 44, 25.40% from 45 to 64, and 13.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 102.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $34,477, and the median income for a family is $40,784. Males have a median income of $31,148 versus $23,652 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,014. 13.20% of the population and 10.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 17.30% of those under the age of 18 and 12.10% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
