Sequoyah County is a county located in the state of Oklahoma. As of 2000, the population is 38,972. Its county seat is Sallisaw6.

Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,852 km² (715 mi²). 1,745 km² (674 mi²) of it is land and 106 km² (41 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.74% water.

Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 38,972 people, 14,761 households, and 10,982 families residing in the county. The population density is 22/km² (58/mi²). There are 16,940 housing units at an average density of 10/km² (25/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 68.12% White, 1.86% Black or African American, 19.64% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.74% from other races, and 9.39% from two or more races. 2.03% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 14,761 households out of which 34.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.20% are married couples living together, 11.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.60% are non-families. 22.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.61 and the average family size is 3.05.
In the county, the population is spread out with 27.40% under the age of 18, 8.20% from 18 to 24, 26.90% from 25 to 44, 24.00% from 45 to 64, and 13.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 97.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.50 males.
