Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,863 km² (1,105 mi²). 2,851 km² (1,101 mi²) of it is land and 11 km² (4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.39% water.

There are 19,444 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (18/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 87.31% White, 3.06% Black or African American, 4.85% Native American, 0.34% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.12% from other races, and 3.28% from two or more races. 2.89% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 17,341 households out of which 34.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.50% are married couples living together, 9.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.20% are non-families. 22.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 3.02.
In the county, the population is spread out with 26.70% under the age of 18, 9.30% from 18 to 24, 27.70% from 25 to 44, 23.20% from 45 to 64, and 13.10% who are 65 years of age or older.
