Pawnee County is a county located in the state of Oklahoma. As of 2000, the population is 16,612. Its county seat is Pawnee6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,541 km² (595 mi²). 1,475 km² (569 mi²) of it is land and 66 km² (25 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.27% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 16,612 people, 6,383 households, and 4,748 families residing in the county. The population density is 11/km² (29/mi²). There are 7,464 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (13/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 82.27% White, 0.69% Black or African American, 12.13% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.24% from other races, and 4.42% from two or more races. 1.16% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,383 households out of which 32.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.60% are married couples living together, 9.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.60% are non-families. 22.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 3.02.

In the county, the population is spread out with 26.50% under the age of 18, 7.30% from 18 to 24, 26.20% from 25 to 44, 25.20% from 45 to 64, and 14.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 97.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $31,661, and the median income for a family is $37,274. Males have a median income of $29,946 versus $21,069 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,261. 13.00% of the population and 9.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 16.60% of those under the age of 18 and 13.80% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
