Payne County, Oklahoma

Payne County is a county located in the state of Oklahoma. As of 2000, the population is 68,190. Its county seat is Stillwater6, and the county is named for Capt. David L. Payne.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,806 km² (697 mi²). 1,778 km² (686 mi²) of it is land and 28 km² (11 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.55% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 68,190 people, 26,680 households, and 15,314 families residing in the county. The population density is 38/km² (99/mi²). There are 29,326 housing units at an average density of 16/km² (43/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 84.33% White, 3.63% Black or African American, 4.58% Native American, 3.00% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.77% from other races, and 3.64% from two or more races. 2.15% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 26,680 households out of which 25.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.60% are married couples living together, 8.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 42.60% are non-families. 30.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.29 and the average family size is 2.90.

In the county, the population is spread out with 19.60% under the age of 18, 25.90% from 18 to 24, 26.20% from 25 to 44, 17.60% from 45 to 64, and 10.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 28 years. For every 100 females there are 103.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 102.60 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $28,733, and the median income for a family is $40,823. Males have a median income of $31,132 versus $21,113 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,983. 20.30% of the population and 10.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 16.00% of those under the age of 18 and 8.50% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
