Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,685 km² (1,423 mi²). 3,619 km² (1,397 mi²) of it is land and 66 km² (25 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.79% water.

There are 5,795 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (4/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 77.97% White, 0.82% Black or African American, 15.59% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.29% from other races, and 5.16% from two or more races. 1.64% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 4,739 households out of which 30.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.30% are married couples living together, 10.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.60% are non-families. 27.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 2.94.
