Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,443 km² (943 mi²). 2,354 km² (909 mi²) of it is land and 90 km² (35 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.67% water.

The racial makeup of the county is 80.02% White, 1.42% Black or African American, 12.16% Native American, 0.44% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.08% from other races, and 4.84% from two or more races. 2.65% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 14,422 households out of which 30.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.00% are married couples living together, 10.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.10% are non-families. 26.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 2.98.
