Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,047 km² (404 mi²). 996 km² (385 mi²) of it is land and 51 km² (20 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.87% water.

As of the census² of 2000, there are 27,947 people, 10,458 households, and 7,582 families residing in the county. The population density is 28/km² (73/mi²). There are 11,959 housing units at an average density of 12/km² (31/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 64.13% White, 22.03% Black or African American, 0.75% Native American, 3.16% Asian, 0.41% Pacific Islander, 4.10% from other races, and 5.41% from two or more races. 8.45% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 10,458 households out of which 39.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.90% are married couples living together, 12.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.50% are non-families. 22.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.61 and the average family size is 3.07.
In the county the population is spread out with 29.60% under the age of 18, 13.60% from 18 to 24, 30.00% from 25 to 44, 17.40% from 45 to 64, and 9.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 29 years. For every 100 females there are 97.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.30 males.
