White County is a county located in the state of Tennessee. As of 2000, the population is 23,102. Its county seat is Sparta6.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 983 km² (379 mi²). 975 km² (377 mi²) of it is land and 7 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.74% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 23,102 people, 9,229 households, and 6,774 families residing in the county. The population density is 24/km² (61/mi²). There are 10,191 housing units at an average density of 10/km² (27/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.63% White, 1.64% Black or African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.46% from other races, and 0.79% from two or more races. 1.03% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 9,229 households out of which 30.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.50% are married couples living together, 10.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.60% are non-families. 23.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 2.90.

In the county, the population is spread out with 23.50% under the age of 18, 7.90% from 18 to 24, 27.90% from 25 to 44, 25.40% from 45 to 64, and 15.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 96.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $29,383, and the median income for a family is $34,854. Males have a median income of $26,706 versus $20,346 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,791. 14.30% of the population and 11.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 16.90% of those under the age of 18 and 13.90% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
