According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,554 km² (600 mi²). 1,551 km² (599 mi²) of it is land and 2 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.14% water.

There are 13,057 housing units at an average density of 8/km² (22/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 87.68% White, 10.35% Black or African American, 0.24% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.45% from other races, and 1.10% from two or more races. 1.31% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
