Hamilton County is a county located in the state of Tennessee. Its county seat is Chattanooga6.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,491 km² (576 mi²). 1,405 km² (542 mi²) of it is land and 86 km² (33 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.78% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 307,896 people, 124,444 households, and 83,750 families residing in the county. The population density is 219/km² (568/mi²). There are 134,692 housing units at an average density of 96/km² (248/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 76.32% White, 20.14% Black or African American, 0.29% Native American, 1.27% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.77% from other races, and 1.14% from two or more races. 1.78% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 124,444 households out of which 28.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.20% are married couples living together, 13.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.70% are non-families. 27.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.41 and the average family size is 2.95.
In the county, the population is spread out with 23.20% under the age of 18, 9.60% from 18 to 24, 29.00% from 25 to 44, 24.30% from 45 to 64, and 13.80% who are 65 years of age or older.
