Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,353 km² (522 mi²). 1,352 km² (522 mi²) of it is land and 1 km² (0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.07% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 19,757 people, 6,990 households, and 5,235 families residing in the county. The population density is 15/km² (38/mi²). There are 7,714 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (15/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.72% White, 2.23% Black or African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 0.59% from two or more races. 0.61% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 6,990 households out of which 33.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.70% are married couples living together, 10.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.10% are non-families. 22.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 3.01.
