Hawkins County is a county located in the state of Tennessee. As of 2000, the population is 53,563. Its county seat is Rogersville6.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,294 km² (500 mi²). 1,260 km² (487 mi²) of it is land and 34 km² (13 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.60% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 53,563 people, 21,936 households, and 15,925 families residing in the county. The population density is 42/km² (110/mi²). There are 24,416 housing units at an average density of 19/km² (50/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.24% White, 1.55% Black or African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.23% from other races, and 0.56% from two or more races. 0.78% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 21,936 households out of which 31.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.30% are married couples living together, 9.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.40% are non-families. 24.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 2.86.
In the county, the population is spread out with 23.30% under the age of 18, 7.50% from 18 to 24, 30.00% from 25 to 44, 25.90% from 45 to 64, and 13.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 94.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.50 males.
