Tipton County is a county located in the state of Tennessee. As of 2000, the population is 51,271. Its county seat is Covington6.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,230 km² (475 mi²). 1,190 km² (459 mi²) of it is land and 40 km² (15 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.23% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 51,271 people, 18,106 households, and 14,176 families residing in the county. The population density is 43/km² (112/mi²). There are 19,064 housing units at an average density of 16/km² (42/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 77.86% White, 19.90% Black or African American, 0.38% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.38% from other races, and 1.04% from two or more races. 1.21% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 18,106 households out of which 39.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.20% are married couples living together, 13.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 21.70% are non-families. 18.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
