According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,447 km² (559 mi²). 1,443 km² (557 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.29% water.

The racial makeup of the county is 65.20% White, 32.46% Black or African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.63% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.67% from other races, and 0.86% from two or more races. 1.71% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
