Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,362 km² (526 mi²). 1,347 km² (520 mi²) of it is land and 15 km² (6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.12% water.

The racial makeup of the county is 90.45% White, 8.00% Black or African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.33% from other races, and 0.94% from two or more races. 0.97% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 10,306 households out of which 32.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.90% are married couples living together, 11.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.70% are non-families. 24.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
