According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,448 km² (945 mi²). 2,379 km² (919 mi²) of it is land and 68 km² (26 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.80% water.

The racial makeup of the county is 84.16% White, 1.79% Black or African American, 7.53% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.98% from other races, and 4.00% from two or more races. 4.25% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 19,157 households out of which 31.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.70% are married couples living together, 10.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.40% are non-families. 27.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
