Barton County (standard abbreviation: BT) is a county located in the state of Kansas. As of 2000, the population is 28,205. The largest city and county seat is Great Bend.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,332 km² (900 mi²). 2,315 km² (894 mi²) of it is land and 17 km² (6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.72% water. The geographic center of Kansas is located in Barton County.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 28,205 people, 11,393 households, and 7,530 families residing in the county. The population density is 12/km² (32/mi²). There are 12,888 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (14/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 92.98% White, 1.15% Black or African American, 0.51% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 3.51% from other races, and 1.60% from two or more races. 8.31% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 11,393 households out of which 31.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.10% are married couples living together, 7.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.90% are non-families. 30.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.41 and the average family size is 3.01.

In the county the population is spread out with 26.00% under the age of 18, 9.00% from 18 to 24, 25.10% from 25 to 44, 22.00% from 45 to 64, and 17.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 93.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $32,176, and the median income for a family is $39,929. Males have a median income of $28,803 versus $20,428 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,695. 12.90% of the population and 9.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 17.00% of those under the age of 18 and 10.90% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
