Hillsborough County is a county located in the U.S. state of Florida. As of 2000, the population is 998,948. Its county seat is Tampa, Florida6.

Hillsborough County charges a discretionary sales tax of 1% on top of Florida's 6%. It is only collected on the first $5000 of any large purchase.

History

Hillsborough County was created in 1834. It was named for Wills Hill, Viscount Hillsborough of England.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,279 km² (1,266 mi²). 2,722 km² (1,051 mi²) of it is land and 558 km² (215 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 17.00% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 998,948 people, 391,357 households, and 255,164 families residing in the county. The population density is 367/km² (951/mi²). There are 425,962 housing units at an average density of 156/km² (405/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 75.17% White, 14.96% Black or African American, 0.39% Native American, 2.20% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 4.66% from other races, and 2.56% from two or more races. 17.99% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 391,357 households out of which 31.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.70% are married couples living together, 13.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.80% are non-families. 26.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 3.07.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.30% under the age of 18, 9.30% from 18 to 24, 31.70% from 25 to 44, 21.70% from 45 to 64, and 12.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 95.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $40,663, and the median income for a family is $48,223. Males have a median income of $34,111 versus $26,962 for females. The per capita income for the county is $21,812. 12.50% of the population and 9.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 17.20% of those under the age of 18 and 10.00% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Despite belief that many of these are cities, only three are. Tampa, Plant City, and Temple Terrace. The rest of the county is typically referred to as "unincorporated Hillsborough County".
